------

He’s not quite ninety when his mother throws him out, and Smaug is left out in the wastes, on his own, barely into his wings.

He doesn’t understand at first, but he goes. It takes him another seventy years (more or less, he can never be quite sure) to grow into his magic, and by that time he is quite ready to find a cave and gather a horde and become a proper dragon.

It doesn’t take him long to find the Mountain. He could smell the wrongness from leagues away, and his first (and only) though is to get the sickness out. To sear and to cauterise and to heal. He doesn’t even notice the dwarves, only that the stench that made his spines tremble is fading.

Dragon magic is an odd thing, and Smaug does not claim to be an expert, but the one thing that he is very good at is shape-shifting. So when, one night, he flies over a green hamlet in the west and he falls in love with the rolling hills and little rivers, it hardly takes him a blink to take on the form of the residents. But he is still a young dragon; so it is only natural that in his new shape he is a very young Hobbit. The couple who find him asleep in a ditch are quick to take him in with very little fuss. The rest of the community decide that he is rather odd, and Mrs Baggins laughs and laughs and declares that he must be some kind of Took, and promptly has him adopted.

And so Samug becomes Bilbo, and except for the odd jaunt back to his Mountain, Bilbo makes the Shire his home.
