"If we had opened the bridge, our city would have looked like New Orleans does now: looted, burned and pillaged."
Do you feel the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Lousiana acted appropriately in this crisis? There's a lot of focus and anger on the federal government, but what about the state level?
At this point I do believe they acted appropriately. However if that quote is from the mayor or Governor I will begin to think otherwise.
Women and children and elderly trying to cross the bridge to get out at the very least should have been let through, put on any form of transportation possible and taken to someplace. Not SHOT AT!!!
In short I have not seen any evidence that they severely bungled. They acted precisely as any other local official does before a hurricane to my knowledge.
The bungling is Thanks to Fema and homeland security.
I don't think there was any transportation because of the flooded streets. I saw that there was an entire parking lot of school buses that couldn't move because of the flooded streets.
Putting people on transportation and taken to someplace, I think, is the responsibility of local officials and not the feds.
Did you not read the timeline? Up until the storm they DID bus people with the metro transportation system free of charge to the dome and other shelters. They had 3 days food and water for 15,000 people there at the dome. The busses flooded after the storm when the feds SHOULD have been there. The governor herself said that they would need massive help after the storm.
You cannot expect the local government to be able to function once they have been pretty much flattened by a hurricane. If that was the case then there would be no need for a FEMA now would there?
It seems that a lot of the text in that entry is set to "black" instead of "automatic" color, and I can't see much of it as a result. Might I also suggest a LJ cut next time?
