one of my all time favorites is Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. On the geekier side, "Diamond age" is a really great cyberpunk book about globalization and transnationalism, and "the golden compass" by phillip pullman is a really incredible fantasy-ish book about adolescence, the jungian anim(a/us), and a just war against god.

all of those I liked, I would reccomend "A heartbreaking work of staggering genius" by Dave Eggers, possibly the best book I read last year. I would also reccomend trainspotting (the book) or anything by nabokov.

the new Vonnegutt. Man Without a Country. So fucking brilliant that I finished it in under 2 hours on a plane from Atlanta to SF. I love that man.
