Alice in Wonderland Yeah okay. My plan to not pay money to see this paid off. It was truly awful and painfully obvious Mr. Burton was only in this for the paycheck. My problem with Alice in Wonderland is that it had nothing to do with the Alice in Wonderland books. They used some of the names and some of the images (sort of), but really the move was a Narnia-style “young person falls into an alternate universe and has to save the kingdom” movie. That type of story has nothing at all to do with the Alice books.

I also had to laugh at the contradictory “young independent woman” and “fulfill the prophecy” plotlines:
“I want to live my life and be my own person.”
“NO, you’re gonna do what we say and fulfill the prophecy!”
“But… I can’t kill anyone.”
“TOUGH, you’re gonna kill the dragon and like it!”
“OK, but aside from doing what you say to do and killing who you say to kill I’m going to be my own person and do my own thing.”
“Huh? Uh, yeah, sure, whatever.”

PS: When we saw it my friend Kelly said the only thing that could have made the movie worse is if when Alice got on the boat at the end Johnny Depp was the captain so she could fall instantly in love with him. At least they spared us that!

UG I think on some level I expected that too - as if the flirtation with the Hatter wasn't weird enough. That's what I meant by mired in plot - 'the chosen one' made me think they're trying to take the Harry Potter angle and failing miserably. I didn't get that contradiction, heh. Nice.
