I can't stand it when i can't be honest with the person that supposedly wants to change. Yet doing the same things - I can't stand circles, they get you nowhere.

Definitely a girl thing. His reaction is definitely a guy thing.
If your fine when your around him and hate it when he backs away. You may have to modify the way you react to situations. Maybe take a step back when you get worked up and take a look at this big picture.
I really don't know another way to explain it. Maybe if we went into specific situations then I maybe a little bit more helpful.
You do release that it is a fault of yours that you need to improve upon so thats the first step to fixing it. Just try to focus on the problem when it happens and try to make the first step to fix it. After it happens a few times and you fix it when it happens, it may become a normal reaction to just not do it anymore or at least a modified way of it.
