Lady Fon hated coming to see her but she was desperate and she was surprisingly crafty. But then again, what else was to be expected from one who worked as the King's own personal assassin: the previous Soifon.
"So, dear Shaolin is really in love and has you spooked!" said the old woman, laughing in delight, "Now this is unexpected. But Shaolin has pride and honour and she has done my old codename proud! Why not compromise? Give her what she wants."
"What she wants cannot be given to her," replied Lady Fon, "Today, she is talking about having children with him and then raising them herself. What of tomorrow? Will she ask to marry him but with him remaining in the Kira clan or worse? She is letting her emotions dictate her actions. She'll end up hurting the clan."
The old woman burst out laughing, "The clan has survived far worse then anything Shaolin can do to it. Say rather that if Shaolin leaves the clan, you who are little more then a breeding mare will lose all her power," Lady Fon gritted her teeth as the elder Soifon went on, "Of your six children, only Shaolin survived. She is now the undisputed star of the clan and has surpassed all who came before her. She is the only reason anyone thinks you are capable of raising worthwhile members of the Fon clan and have thus been allowed to keep your title of matriarch. However, while you had the presence of mind to secure a bride for your sons as soon as possible and get off-springs from them, none of your grandchildren have amounted to anything. They are all still rank-an-file soldiers. They still live but only because consciously or unconsciously, Shaolin has kept them from undertaking truly dangerous missions. More importantly, none of them even have a problem with it. They are content with their paltry existence and meagre achievements. Indeed, despite nearly two centuries of you watching over Fon children, your own and those of other clan members, none of your charges have made an impact. As for the Shaolin, your only success," the old woman smirked cruelly, "You might have fooled everybody else, but I know as well as you that Shaolin's success is more properly attributed to Shihoin Yoruichi then to you. You have managed to cover-up this fact rather well. Making it appear that Shaolin is somehow attached to you. But the illusion will collapse the moment Shaolin walks out of the Fon clan for the sake of Kira Izuru."
Lady Fon took a deep breath to steady herself before saying, "Nothing is certain with that girl and Shihoin Yoruichi. But there is a good chance that she would pick Kira Izuru over Shihoin Yoruichi as well."
"True, but Shihoin Yoruichi doesn't need for Shaolin to follow her around like a puppy dog to maintain her power and status. You do," said the elder Soifon, "There is only one path open to you and we both know what that path is. All I ask is that you wait a little while before taking it."
"Why?" wondered Lady Fon, "What can be gained by waiting?"
"How old do you think I am?" asked the elder Soifon, but she did not wait for an answer, "I do not have long to live. I can feel my body beginning to shut down. A week, maybe two and I will be but particles in the air. I was hoping to outlive Yamamoto but that old fool is surprisingly tenacious and just won't die! A well, you can't have everything," the old woman focused on Lady Fon, "Wait until my funeral. I ask this because, I actually love my great-granddaughter and prefer not to see her in pain. However, this plan is not without benefit to you. My funeral would be the perfect time to strike. If only because it will be a big flashy event and big flashy events are perfect time for assassinations."
"That's easy for you to say," countered Lady Fon angrily, "If I could assassinate a captain of the Gotei 13 so easily then I would have removed Kira Izuru a long time ago!"
"I am sure you would," said the elder Soifon, a little bored, "It is true that it is difficult to find an assassin capable of easily taking out a Gotei 13 captain. The only one who is capable is Shaolin herself and there is no chance she would turn against Captain Kira is there. Pity your darling from the Shinigami Academy, Aizen Souske is dead eh?" Lady Fon froze in shock and horror, "O don't look like that. Did you really think I don't know that you where at the academy at the same time as Aizen and were well acquainted with him. You don't think I know you sold Fon clan secrets to that man? But don't worry, fortunately for you, I didn't find out the truth until it was too late too do anything about it. I have no desire to expose you and risk bringing shame upon the clan. Even if Shaolin played her part and performed her duty in the war against Aizen and his Arrancar, there will still be repercussions for the clan and that I will not allow," explained the Elder Soifon, causing Lady Fon to relax somewhat, "But tell me," continued the old woman, "What did that man leave you?"
"Pardon," replied Lady Fon, even as she resisted the urge to shift uneasily.
"Don't play dumb," warned the elder Soifon, "The price Aizen paid for the clans secret, what was it?" Briefly, Lady Fon considered her options, before deciding trying to hide things weren't going to help her. So she told the elder Soifon everything. When she finished, the elder Soifon said simply, "I see. Well looks like my funeral will be quite an event. Pity I will miss it all."
The best part of the Kira estate was the natural spring that formed part of the private bath area. It was the reason that Kira Izuru's great, great, great grandfather had paid an arm and a leg for what was then a dilapidated hell hole, far from anything of significance. Indeed, when the property was first bought, it was considered part of Rukongai, not Seireitei. That all changed when the Shinigami Academy was built and the boundaries of Seireitei was moved. Not that Kira Izuru would care whether his house was in Rukongai or Seireitei, all he cared about was who was in it with him. For the longest time the only person that roamed the passages of his house was himself. After his parents death, he had lived in the house utterly alone. Most of the house lay locked-up back then, Kira not having the money or the time to properly maintain most of the house. Indeed, following his parents death he had been forced to sell almost everything in the house. In the end, all he had left was his futon, a pot and couple of dishes. He pretty much lived in the kitchen, it being the smaller then the living room, the hearth there more effectively heated the room in winter and of course, cooking did not take extra kindling.
Kira did all he could to save money. He did odd jobs for the local merchants in change for food and old cloths. He scrapped and hoarded and stayed refused to indulge himself even a little. It had been a miserably existence but it was all worth it when he got into the Shinigami Academy and good readily pay the fees he had to. He had loved his time in the Shinigami Academy, he was able to make friends, live comfortably and most importantly, he wasn't alone. Once he made it into the Gotei 13, he worked heard, played as hard as he dared and finally, finally had the money to set his parents house right. Although he wasn't sure why he was setting it right. He couldn't imagine living there, all alone, not again, not ever again. But now, now that he was soaking in his own private hot spring with Soifon in his arms, he was glad that he no matter how hard life got, he never held on to his parents lega... "Ouch!" he screamed as Soifon roughly pinched him, "What was that for!"
"You have a gloomy look on your face," said Soifon, "Didn't I tell you that you are banned to look gloomy when we are naked? Its not good for my self-esteem if my lover looks gloomy while I am naked."
Kira smiled softly, "You don't have to worry, I can never be gloomy about you being naked..." he was interrupted by a light knock on the door that connected the enclosed hot spring to the rest of the house, "Excuse me Captain Soifon," said the servant, a man Kira had hired as a caretaker for the place once he enough money to hire someone like that, now of course he worked as a general steward for the house, happily so, "Vice-captain Omaeda is here to see you."
"Argh! Tell that fat-lump to go away! It's my day-off!" replied Soifon.
"Excuse me, Captain Soifon," said the stewart, "But he told me to emphasis that this is news that you would want to hear immediately."
Sofion huffed, "If this ends-up being nothing, I am going to forcible make Omaeda lose half his body weight!" with that she got-up and headed out.
Kira smiled to himself and returned to his thoughts. It hadn't been easy to convince Soifon to move in with him. She had lived together with her men or comrades for so long, the concept of having a house of her own was almost and alien concept. Plus Soifon hadn't been entirely happy when she did live with her mother in the Fon estate, so the concept of a "home" for her was the barrack. Kira at least had fond memories of living with his parents and he wanted to feel that again. So he had reasoned, begged, pleaded until Soifon agreed to give it a try. It hadn't been a smooth start but they stuck to the plan and was now hap... someone screamed... Soifon screamed! Kira was out of the hot spring and pulling on his Yukuta as he rushed out to see what was the matter. He found Soifon kneeling on the ground, looking shell shocked with Omaeda awkwardly kneeling with her, babbling, "Captain... um... she was old... she... its probably for the best... it was time..."
"What's going on?" demanded Kira, as he came to knelt down beside Soifon, "Shaolin, what..."
"She's dead," replied Soifon, "The other Soifon, my great, great grandmother... she's dead!"
