A Minor Mystery (or, My Awesome Uncle)

Mar 08, 2007 09:14

Many years ago, around the time my parents got married, my dad took slides on his old Minolta SLR of some old photographs that were in the possession of my great-grandparents (the Duttons, my mom's grandparents). These pictures have long since been lost, if they're still in existence. But several years ago, my Uncle Bob (my dad's brother) scanned ( Read more... )

That's amazing.

It's little things like that that make me love history. I'm not much for geneaology, but when it's other peoples families, it's history. I for one am glad you shared this. Fascinating.

Thanks! Did you ever read that paper I wrote for Alabama history, where I wove my own families and genealogy into a historical paper? It was probably kind of a sucky scholastically, but it sure was fun, and I got an A. :-p

WOW. What a great guy your uncle is. :) This was a very interesting story to share with us. I think I shall "keep" you. ;) What beautiful pictures, too. I love old-timey photos.

Before I even got to the part where it said "Pilgrims Progress"; that's what my guess was.

Thanks!

There was a bit on NPR the other day that made me laugh so hard, about Chicago and L.A. and the Olympics. I thought of you and thought you'd get a kick out of it. I think this is it (though I'm not positive), if you haven't heard it:

(Wandered here from _haydee_'s journal...your LJ name made me think of Tolkien [Tol Brandir?]...)

I love old books. Love love love them and their provenance. This is a fascinating discovery.

You're dead on. I was looking for something cool for a journal name, and looked for something in Elvish dictionaries, but eventually copped out and made a compound of a couple of roots I already knew: ereb ("lonely", as in Erebor) and randir ("pilgrim", as in Mithrandir). It has come in and out of suiting me over the years, but then I registered the domain name LonelyPilgrim.com, so i guess it is stuck with me.

I was going to ask if I could add you, but it seems you beat me to the punch! I know I've seen you around _haydee_'s and frey_at_last's journals. Welcome!

School got busy, and I hadn't had a chance to check back on the LJ name origins. But now I've read it, and I'll can say is, "Elvish Dictionary!" and grin.
