One of my worst faults is that I see most things in black and white, which makes it fairly impossible for me to have rational discussions with those who don't agree with me. (I can discuss, and understand others' points of view, but not rationally.) Which means I simply *don't get* the arguments against fanfic that have been appearing lately -- ( Read more... )

That's it in a nutshell. They'll never understand it though. By 'they' I don't mean the ones who misunderstand copyright law and see fan writers as a threat to their (temporary) ownership. I mean the ones who believe that ownership is absolute -- not just ownership of the words but ownership of what their characters and their world mean. The ones who, in their heart of hearts, don't want readers to think sideways; who want to police reader response; who believe that authorial intent is sacred; who act like fundamentalists protecting Holy Writ.

And most of all -- this is the one that really ticks me off -- those who believe that if you use someone else's characters or world it's a) easy b) lazy c) never original and d) not actually writing at all.
