The World As We (Don't) Know It

(Some super-brief background world information for reference that may only make sense to me.)

Imagine a world like just like this one.  The history, the people, everything is the same, except for one difference.  Supernatural creatures are real.  Fairies, dragons, vampires, werewolves, all of them exist.  Every fairytale you’ve heard and every fantasy movie you’ve seen has some truth behind it.

In antiquity, the supernatural and the natural world coexisted.  Gryphons nested openly on mountainsides and Kraken swam the seas.  Humans knew that some individuals were born with special abilities and accepted them.

Then, something changed.

The gifted humans decided that they deserved to reign over their mundane brethren.  They crowned themselves deities and tried to rule on high.  It worked for centuries until the mundane humans began to rebel.  With numbers on their side, they toppled their deities.  Then, they proceeded to seek vengeance on all supernatural creatures.  Much of the supernatural world was purged.  The rest went into hiding.

With the supernatural world destroyed, humanity took its final revenge.  It pretended that supernatural creatures had never existed.  History became fantasy, and eventually the lie became the truth.

But the supernatural world continues to exist.  It quietly supports corporations and branches of government.  Humans with abilities continue to be born, but now they’re kept a secret.  Some say this secret can’t be kept forever.  The old leaders and alliances are losing power, and beliefs that have lasted for centuries are crumbling.  There’s a revolution brewing, and it’s ready to erupt.
