Seeking Ipod/MP3 player advice

All right, brothers and sisters: I'm thinking of getting an MP3 player, but I have no idea where to start. I want to put a lot of music on it, but I don't need the biggest thing around. I think between 500 and 1000 songs worth of space, but I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I can go lower. I don't care about video play; in fact, I'd rather

I think the iPod is still the way to go. I've had two, L has had two, we all like them. Accessories are so easy to get that they're like litter. More and more cars come with iPod interfaces. 8gb iPod Touch goes for $150 at Apple and $134 at Amazon.

Edit: For clarification's sake, I've had two because the first was stolen, and L's had two because she started with a Shuffle and they're a pain. We've had no reliability concerns.
