A bit of news here for Doctor Who fans -- 106 lost Doctor Who episodes featuring the first two Doctors have been discovered in Ethiopia. For real. Who'd have thought it?

Maybe if they look a little more they'll find a complete copy of London After Midnight, too.

I imagine they're working on it.

And really -- 106 episodes, from just the first two doctors? I thought the first two Doctors had only a season's worth (in American TV-terms; figure about 26 hour-long individual episodes) of episodes each. The sheer number was a surprise to me!

The first Doctor had 3 seasons of about 8 series, each with about 4 episodes. The second Doctor had 3 seasons of about 7 series, each with about 6 episodes.

So this isn't even half of the missing episodes.

Each episode, though, is about 20 minutes.

Your numbers are a bit high; not all of the first two Doctors' episodes are missing, and not all of their stories were the same length.

Season 1:
episodes (5 and 6) of The Reign of Terror are missing.
all seven episodes of Marco Polo are missing

Season 2: only two episodes (2 and 4) of The Crusade are missing.

Season 3 is where we start losing a lot of episodes: (28 total)

  • Galaxy 4: three episodes (1, 2, and 4) are missing

  • Mission to the Unknown: one episode missing

  • The Myth Makers: all four episodes missing

  • The Daleks' Master Plan: nine episodes ( 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12) missing

  • The Massacre: all four episodes missing

MCP, Mount Oregano, thanks for helping to explain why this is such a good thing for fans of old-school Who.
