Cheeecake Factory Syndrome...that reminds me of the "Going to the University of Washington Syndrome" which is exactly the same thing. Their philosophy is, do your thing, get your degree in four years and get out. You want help, you don't like it that we lost your registration info and now you can't get into any of your classes you need to graduate this quarter, you're upset that we continually forget to send your transcripts to graduate schools and make you pay $6 to resend every time, have a problem that dorm food is priced as high as a four-star resturant? Get the hell out, there is some sap on the waiting list who's dying for your spot.

I was so shocked when I started at UPS, where a salad and large drink was $3, parking was free, the professors called me at home when I emailed them a question, and for the first time in my school-going history UPS made a note that I go by m middle name and put it in my file.

You don't go to the Cheesecake Factory anymore, and I don't go to the UW anymore. Thank goodness.

McMinnamins...is that also a restaurant chain? It sounds like it should be the name of a too-cute-for-their-own-good restaurant, like Fuddrucker's or Moose McGillicudy's.

I just don't get the Cheesecake Factory. How can they possibly get new customers? What could possibly entice someone who's never eaten there to brave those kind of lines, when there just has to be a faster and less frustrating option somewhere else, even if it's in the next area code?

Is it always the same ten people in line? Do they put a secret chemical in the cheesecake to make you crave it fortnightly?

McMenamins is a chain of 50 or so brew pubs and inns in Oregon and Washington. They do not have a particularly strong branding around the parent company though; every place has it's own name, like Dad Watson's in Seattle, or Kennedy School in Portland. It's named after the brothers who founded it.

I have no idea why Cheesecake Factory is so popular. I mean, the food is good and certainly plentiful, but nothing special. But opening up one of those things is like a license to print money.
