Mrs. Torres looked out of the kitchen window and saw Callie sitting under an awning on the backside of the house. “How is she today Maria?”, she turned around and watched her with concern as Maria prepared dinner, “Has she eaten anything today?”
”Yes ma’m, but not much. But I bring her something outside later, I don’t think that she will eat dinner with you later.” “Mmh, who brought Ms Yang to the airport?” “Raul brought her to the airport because he had to take care of a few other things in town.” “Thanks Maria, I think should go and talk with my husband if there are any outcomes of the search so far.”
Mrs. Torres left the room at the same moment as Callie entered the kitchen. “It smells delicious Maria, as always.” “Are you hungry, you can eat if you want to?”, Maria asked with a hopeful voice. Callie tried to smile but felt miserable and a few tears were running down her cheeks. Maria came over to her and cupped Callie’s cheeks in her hands stroked her tears away with her thumb.
”My little Callie, you have to take care of yourself. How on earth would your Erica recognize you when you’re so skinny?” “I know, but I think I don’t have the strength to eat anything. I had always eaten with Erica in the cafeteria but now…she isn’t there anymore to scold me that I should eat healthier,” Callie smiled a little at the memory, “I want her back Maria I need her to do that again, I need her there by my side when I’m miserable because she would have told me to get up again and walk tall.”
”I could do that for you if you want to.” “Thank you Maria, but it’s not the same, besides your lacking the blond hair and the wonderful blue eyes.”
Maria looked at her thoughtfully as she prepared something for Callie to eat, “You know what? I know you your whole life, I remember the day as you ran after your brother because he scared you so much, and you were chasing him through the house and at the end he was screaming so loud because you punched him for what he did to you. Your mother was furious, and locked you in your room.”
Callie laughed, “Yeah I remember that too since than he hadn’t tried anything again.” “I remember your suitors as well, a few were scared of you at the end. But still you’ve gone your way, studied, grew older and wiser and you fell in love.” “I wasn’t really in love with George, yes I married him but it wasn’t the real one.”
”I wasn’t talking about George, I meant Erica. I have never seen you so miserable but still when you’re talking about her, your eyes are glowing and you smile is there again. You do really love her, don’t you?”
”More than you know, I have this feeling when I’m with her that nothing can harm me. When her arms are around me I feel protected. I have butterflies in my belly when she enters the room and everything lights up when she smiles. But when she left me, it felt as the world got dark forever, I didn’t care about my work anymore because she wasn’t there. I didn’t care how I looked because for who should I have to make myself looking good. My chest is aching as if it could burst any minute, but there isn’t anything left there that could probably hurt because when she left she took my heart with her. I don’t want it back, I want her back. I want to smell her hair again, feel her touch and I want to kiss her again.”
Maria engulfed her in a tight hug and rubbed her back as Callie was sobbing on her shoulder, “Shh, everything’s going to be ok. Your dad will find the, I sure because I know him long enough to know that he can manage everything. It’s just a week now, don’t abandon your hope it just takes a little longer. You will see and then you’re back at her side where you belong,” Maria held her a arms length, and then she said with a smirk on her face, “And then you can kiss her senseless and do things to her that I don’t really want to know. But I promise you here and now that I help you to get her back even when I have to kidnap her and shove some sense into her myself.”
Callie smiled her real smile for the first time the whole week since they tried to find Erica Hahn and hugged Maria, “Thank you so much. Don’t ever do what I did to your loved ones.” And with that Callie sat on a stool and ate what Maria cooked especially for her.

The whole Torres family got together late the same evening to discuss the results of the search so far. Callie was nervous because her father had said to her earlier that there is good news. “Hey Callie, Christina said she’s sorry that she had to leave so quickly but they treated her to come back to Seattle. She was swearing the whole way to the airport it, you should have seen her,” Raul said to her with a smile as he set beside her on the couch.
”Thanks again for taking her to the airport she said she would come back again if I need her. It’s good to know that I still have a good friend as her.” Callie was grateful to have Christina even if she had her moments, they were better friends than she thought and she was glad about that.
Callie laid her head on Raul’s shoulder and waited for her father to start and would tell them at last what’s going on, “So it seems everyone’s here. Let us begin what information we got so far, from Callie and my reliable informants.” “Darlin can we skip that please, just tell us that we don’t already know.”
”Well…you know that nowhere in the states is a hint about her whereabouts, not even in Europe as Raul had asked his friends, I know it’s just a week but when the best cardiac-thoracic surgeon of this country there must normally be a trace. We searched everywhere….” “Come to the point, I love you but please say us what you know, god damn it.” “Mom!” Callie shrieked amazed, her mother had never interrupted her dad before. “What she’s true, dad is talking and talking and.…”
”Stop now all of you,” Mr. Torres yelled and everyone looked at him dumbfounded, “If you had let me finished I would have told you that she isn’t somewhere else because she still is in Seattle.”
”What do you mean she’s still in Seattle, she sold her house she can’t be there anymore.” “She is, I’ve checked. Callie how much do you know about her family?” “She hasn’t talked much about them, she lost her mother early and lost contact with her father as he married again. She also told me that there was some trouble with him. Why do you ask?”
”Because I’ve recognized her, on the picture you gave us, she’s from an old aristocratic family, her grandmother was Elisabeth Hahn-McGillian one of the high-society in Seattle. Unfortunately twenty-three years ago her daughter, Erica’s mother, Grace had a horrible accident and died immediately, after that her father got custody but it was complicated because Erica’s grandmother didn’t trust him and she was right. A short while later he married again and tried to get a hold on Erica’s inheritance, but her grandmother fought him, saved the money and got custody of her. But after everything Elisabeth Hahn-McGillian died a short while later of a heart attack. A few people meant that her death wasn’t naturally but no one had any proof that it was Erica’s father. She must have studied medicine already, I think because of what happened with her grandmother she specialist later on cardio.”
”I...,” Callie was speechless, “I don’t know what to say, so what does that mean now? That she is still in Seattle but not in her old house?”
”Yes sweetheart, outside of Seattle there is the McGillian estate, it’s very big. No one lived there for years but according to some rumors someone moved in a few weeks ago, it can be Erica. I don’t know anybody else because she’s the last one of the McGillian family. So let’s go, I will book the flight and arrange everything for us to stay in Seattle. Raul, please stay here in Miami and take care of the company. The rest of us should go and pack, we have to get Callie back to her love,” Mr. Torres smiled at Callie and left with Raul to take care of everything.
Callie sat there and had no idea what to do next, Mrs. Torres watched her daughter closely, “What is it Callie?” “She said that she didn’t know me....but the truth is I don’t know her. I had no idea who she really is. She has money, a lot of it so it seems, she hasn’t told me. What else didn’t she tell me?”
”Don’t even start with that. You too haven’t told anyone that you’re from money. Has she told you everything, I’m sure you would have treated her differently.” “No I would not!”, Callie said with emphasis. “Sure you would and don’t deny it, it’s different. Callie, she lost everyone in her life and inherited the money from her grandmother.”
”How can you be so sure about that, that I would have treated her differently if she told me?” “She lived in Seattle, but didn’t live in the family estate. Everyone knew who the McGillian’s are. If she lived there too everyone would have treated her differently.”
”She should have told, because then the Chief wouldn’t have treated her the way he did.” “Yes, but he shouldn’t have done it anyway. Come on sweetheart let us pack some things and then you should call Christina and tell her that we’re coming.” Both got up and called for Maria, “Maria, could you please help my husband to pack his luggage because if he does this alone there would be chaos.”
Maria came around the corner and said, “I’m sorry ma’m but I think I could help you out how to contact the McGillian estate.” Callie her mother looked at her dumbfounded. “My cousin worked for Elisabeth Hahn-McGillian and I think that he still works there now. I’ll go and make a quick call and then go and help pack Mr. Torres’ luggage.”
Callie ran over to her and engulfed her in a fierce hug, “Thank you so much Maria, you don’t know what that means to me.” “Sure I do little one, and now go and get your girl. Promise me that you won’t come back without her.”
”That I promise you with all that I have,” Callie let Maria go that she could make the call.
”Better now sweetheart?”, Mrs. Torres gave her a one-armed hug. “Yeah mom, now I know that everything’s going to be alright because I know where she is. I will fight for her with everything that I have. I’ve run enough, now I’m going back to where I belong and I will show her how much she means to me.”
Callie wasn’t the same anymore, her mother observed, she was ready to fight. To fight for life, for love because she finally realized that Erica is the only thing she needed to finally be whole and happy.
