Chapter Three

James uttered a guttural moan and she knew she’d won this time. Kissing was resumed, hands were everywhere and her shirt stripped off. Her once fiancé took one of her breasts in his mouth and began sucking. While she was whimpering, he flipped her so he was on top. Boots were stripped off while lips continued to mesh.

Elizabeth’s breeches were undone and pulled although not all the way off. She saw that he was looking at her small bump. It was usually hidden by her shirt and breeches although the breeches were becoming more difficult to put on than they used to. James kissed the skin there and touched it with his palm as though it was merely an illusion.

A giggle escaped her lips and his green eyes met her brown ones. Why hadn’t she noticed before how amazing his eyes were? They were so vividly green with a mixture of pleasure, fright and desire. When his lips met hers again, it was slower and sweeter and not exactly what she wanted. She took his hand and guided it to her entrance.

“Touch me,” she requested.

“Touch you where?” he asked and she opened her legs in response.

“I want you to touch me there,” she clarified and spread them wider. His actions were tentative as he stuck a finger where she had told him, but she loved it and found her hips rising to the occasion so he tried two fingers.

“More!” she cried and undid the front of his breeches. James pulled his off and hers the rest of the way off her legs so they were finally both naked in front of each other for the second time. Their coupling was quickly accomplished and she was pleased to notice that it was a lot better than the first time. It was slightly longer, too.

However, what surprised her was how much she enjoyed sleeping in his arms afterwards.
Almost a week later, they sat eating fish except that she finished hers way before he did.

“Are you going to finish that?” she asked and heard how ridiculous it sounded after the words were out of her mouth. He merely smiled and handed the rest of his portion to her before rising up. She knew he was going to catch himself another fish. After eating the rest, she went to go watch him.

Her breeches no longer fit so she was wearing James’ shirt as a dress. She waded out into the water with him and stopped by his side. Something about the water, the breeze, the way he looked at her and everything was just magic. Then, he leaned over and kissed her; a proper kiss where her knees buckled and she saw stars in his arms. Unfortunately, it was too short.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know what possessed me,” he apologized and she was so stunned that she couldn’t correct him. It wasn’t as much that he had done it in daylight for the first time in months as the way it made her feel. The knee-buckling was only comparable to the best of Will’s kisses and that could only mean one thing…that she was beginning to fall in love with James Norrington.

Two more weeks passed and they sat eating sea grapes on the beach.

“Do you know the food I would really love right now?” Elizabeth questioned before popping another one in her mouth.

“What?” he replied.

“Real meat, like a pig,” she said, remembering what it tasted like.

“I’d give anything for that,” James spoke with a smirk she was knew very well, “Actually, after four and a half months of fish, sea grapes and coconuts; I’d even take Hard Tack.”

Then, she caught sight of something shiny from the corner of her eye. She held up the coin and he confirmed, “It’s a Spanish piece of right.”

“That would mean it was nearby, wouldn’t?” she inquired of him.

“Not necessarily,” James answered, looking up. When he started walking towards the highest palm, she figured out his plan and had to object, “You’re mad!” His sinewy, tall form paid her no heed and shimmied up the palm like it were a mast of a ship. She had to admit that she enjoyed the view of his tanned, toned chest and his backside.

In her younger days, she would have loved to climb the ship or the trees around the house before someone could catch her. However, she was having a good day lately if she spent a whole day walking without stumbling, tripping, falling.

“Can you see anything?”
James made his way down even easier, like how she’d seen a monkey do it once, and shook his head.

“I couldn’t see any sign of a ship or a wreck,” he told her and couldn’t help showing his disappointment. She was frustrated, too.

“I must be cursed,” she muttered. There was a frown on his face.
“It must be true. I’m the reason you had to resign, I do not know what has happened to my father, my fiancé is a prisoner aboard the Flying Dutchman, I took that stupid gold medallion from Will, I was the reason you leaned over and fell into the sea which means it’s my fault that we’re stuck here,” she ranted, walking in circles, “and I become with child from my very first relations with a man who’s not even my fiancé.”

“I was once,” he tried to jest with her. It didn’t work as evidenced by her scowl.

“I survived my six brothers and sisters and my parents who all died in the span of less than five months, I received a scar from a bar fight within a year of joining his majesty’s navy, misjudged the speed and direction of a storm so we ended up sailing through it which cost me most of my crew and the ship,” he recalled in that tone that she hated so much, “was forced to join the crew of my enemy and worst of all, I fell madly in a love with a woman who will always be madly in love with someone else so you see that it is I who is cursed.”

Her mouth opened to say something, but no sound came out. She felt as though if she voiced her suspicions aloud, then they would become truth although she felt that what he said wasn’t true. No longer was she only madly in love with one man, now she was in love with two.

A few days later, she was still thinking of this as she lay alone in their shelter while James did his morning rituals. Her hands rested on her ever expanding belly. It was difficult to contemplate that she was going to get much bigger than this when she was already so much larger than her normal self. Then, it happened. She felt movement within her!

Her baby was moving.

A huge grin came over her face at the realization that her baby had done something on its own. There was an actual little person growing inside her which was an extremely frightening thought as well. The impulse struck Elizabeth to run screaming across the island and tell James, but she didn’t.

Part of her was practical and didn’t want to walk in on him pissing or such. Part of her was incredibly selfish and wanted to keep this discovery to herself. She knew this was ridiculous. James was the father and had a right to know. However, it wasn’t as though there was a lot of privacy afforded by the island.

Her selfishness won out just as she supposed it always did. Had she really been that spoiled that she always had to get her way? She needed to stop behaving that way since she had someone more important to think about now.

Eight days later, Elizabeth held James’ sword in her hand while he stood behind her helping to guide her actions. It was going so well until she had more strength than they thought and the sword went soaring some feet away. They both laughed because they’ve been having such a good time before that.

She could only imagine what her father would have to say about her practicing sword play when five months gone with child. Certainly, Will wouldn’t have let her.

Will.

With all the distractions from the baby kicking on a regular basis and discovering that she loved James, who was currently bent over in front of her in an excellent vantage point, she realized that she hardly ever thought of her current fiancé anymore. Had she made her choice without realizing it?

She took the compass from its place and opened it. The green arrow barely spun as it planted itself firmly in the direction of James. With a sigh, she closed it again.

A month passed without her revealing either of her secrets as she rebuttoned her shirt from having to relieve herself. The thing she hated the most about her pregnancy was that it had become such a frequent occurrence. However, James was being awfully quiet so she began looking for him.

He wasn’t far from the storage hold of the rum runner’s and had almost polished off one bottle all by himself.

“James!” she admonished, hurrying as much as she could to his side, “What are you doing?”

“Drinking,” he explained, holding up the bottle before downing the rest of it.

“This is not drinking,” she complained, “This is oblivion.”
A blue Parakeet flew close by and they both ignored it. He reached to get another bottle and she slapped his hand.

“I am Death,” James moaned, looking at the sand, “The mortal coil of everyone around me is severed by my presence.”
Elizabeth pinched herself, but it wasn’t a horrible dream.

“That was proper that the pirates died, but…all my men on the Dauntless and my parents and Rebecca and John and Rose and Christina and Emily and little Lily…Rose was my twin.”

His green eyes were so pained and he hadn’t revealed before that he was a twin. She had twin cousins in England that she remembered were inseparable and when forced to be apart, they were absolutely miserable.

“That wasn’t your doing; you said you were sick as well,” Elizabeth tried to console him and touched his arm.

“But you’re being with child is, women die from childbirth,” he spoke, looking at her like she’d disappear, “I can’t lose you again.”

“You won’t, you won’t,” she pleaded, taking his hands, “I’ll never leave you.”

She found the idea simply absurd that she would die because of this child growing in her.

“You can’t promise me that,” James said, tears falling, “I always lose everything.”

“But I love you…” Elizabeth stated, leaning close to him. He threw off her hands, standing up and spat, “I don’t want to be your Will substitute!”
His leaving was unacceptable so she followed after him. In their enclosure, he kneeled and she kneeled as well which was making her tired.

“I know you love Will and you will never love me the same way,” he spoke and when she shook her head, he continued, “I don’t require your pity.”

“I did love Will but…” she explained by unbuttoning the shirt and laying his hand on the bump where their child lay, “That’s no longer how I feel. I love you; your green eyes, your smile, the way you tell me stories when I can’t sleep.”

That was the moment the baby chose to kick, the first time he had ever felt it. Those green eyes grew very wide and his mouth gaped as well.

“Was that…?” he asked and she loved how he couldn’t form the words so she did so for him.

“Our baby,” she answered, her fingers entwining with his. They shared another look of amazement and she leaned in to kiss him. Their arms wrapped around each other as the kiss deepened and she never wanted it to end.

A little more than a month later, she sat on the beach. She sat most of the time because standing was so exhausting. However, she was slowly improving in her carving. He’d surely be able to guess what she’d been working on today.

“Look,” she said, handing him the piece of wood. There was an elliptical base with a triangle connected.

“You made us a ship!” James exclaimed with a smile and she nodded before adding, “It’s yours, Captain Norrington.”
They both laughed and he remarked, “If only it were bigger.” Then, there was a strange sound. They both looked for the source and Elizabeth couldn’t believe what she saw.

“That can’t be…” she spoke, but he was already going out into the water after the dog on the sea turtle’s back.

“Poochie!” James called and the dog jumped off into the water, “Elizabeth, do you know what this is?”

“A dog?” she guessed, not seeing what made him so excited as the pair came back. The shook himself and water was splattered everywhere, including her, but James merely examined the canine’s mouth, taking something from it that jangled. It was the keys to the Port Royal jail. Now, she understood and vaguely recalled her father looking for the animal the last time that she’d seen Will.

It sat in front of her and barked in a way like it knew her. She was unnerved a little bit.

“I always thought of him as Poochie,” James explained, scratching around the dog’s ears and the animal seemed to whine in an approving way. She held out a cautious hand and touched the mutt. It wasn’t entirely unpleasant.

Luckily, Elizabeth grew to be fond of the canine because over the next three weeks, he barely left her side.

“Take him with you…please, Captain,” she pleaded, using the title she’d bestowed upon him with the small ship. She just wanted some time to herself without dog.

“Captain, eh?” he asked with a smile, “Are you aware what else a Captain is capable of?”
She liked the way he said it and played along by shaking her head in the negative.

“I have in my powers the ability to conduct a wedding,” he informed her and she exclaimed in mock surprise, “Why James, are you trying to propose?”

“Elizabeth,” he spoke, dropping to one knee and taking her hands, “will you be my wife?”
She was tempted to make it into a joke, but she had already accepted his proposal once under false pretenses and this time…this time, she truly meant her answer.

“Yes, I will,” she promised and they kissed until they were interrupted by the dog.

“It appears that he wants to attend,” James remarked and they both smiled.

“I had no plans for this afternoon,” said Elizabeth who felt no need to wait any longer. In only a month or so, the two of them would become three.
