Hey Eric, sorry to hear that you failed your exam, but it sounds like you're handling it really well. I'm glad you're looking at it as an opportunity. I hope you really let yourself follow your heart.

Also, your Dad's advice sounds like he has kind of a narrow definition of success. Also, like maybe he wants what's best for you, but his definition of best is perhaps limited.

I am also sorry to hear that, and I agree with what Ben said above. There are plenty of options left to you, and I personally think that if you'd lost passion in your research project it might be a good push towards something you will enjoy more.

I think that (depending on the style of life you want to lead) your enjoyment of what you do is the most important. The amount of money it makes, how prestigious it is, ... doesn't matter. Not one ounce compared to your happiness. And this does seem to be a liberation of sorts. So go out there and find your passion and enjoy what you do everyday.
