computer went bonkers. disk dr'ed and de-fraged.. feels a little better. i think i might order 768 megs more of ram for about $70, mebbe. prices are low now. mebbe a new HD would be better? computer geekos... what kind should i get? I have a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus I think (40 gig) and the 40 gig IBM Deskstar that came in it. I'm leaning toward ( Read more... )

There has been much discussion over at arstechnica.com about how bad the IBM Deskstars have been. There have numerous drive failures with the GXP models. So, I guess they are to be avoided. I just hope my 75GB Desktar doesn't fail anytime soon.

IBM IDE drives have a notorious reputation for failing. IBM knows this. In all the Dell Optiplexes I manage, the handfull of IDE drives that went bad were ALL IBM Deskstar drives, and they all failed within the first 2 years. Good thing they were still under warranty, and were getting replaced w/ Western Digital drives.

I still prefer Maxtor though, for reliability and price.

And IBM SCSI drives are good at least, but why bother when you can get a Seagate SCSI drive...

by the time i found out it was a piece 'o crap tho, my mac was outta warranty and there is no warranty on OEM drives through IBM.
