Its not like I smoke, drink, take drugs, commit crimes. I consider myself a good person overall maybe sometimes a little selfish. I am a hard worker and I got into a good school. I love my parents and I make an effort to keep in touch with them even though I am up here ( Read more... )

Eric, I totally understand what you're going through right now. I struggle with that same dilemma time and time again.

We're not bad guys. We're not going to ruin our lives with drugs or sex or whatever. What many (Asian, especially) parents don't seem to realize is that success does not equal happiness, that there are many more viable futures for us than becoming, as expected, a doctor or lawyer.

We are stuck in a catch-22: they pressure us to be, say, doctors, and so expect us to study hard and get good grades. However, it's very difficult to study hard and get good grades in something one has little actual interest in. So, by browbeating us into fields we don't necessarily like, they are lowering our chances of actually succeeding in something, becoming good at something we're passionate about.

Asians are often seen as a passive people, always smiling, a calm sea.

But, for many now in our situation, a strong current is forming.

And we are not going to put up with it.

[Stay strong.]

Hey, thanks, I really needed to know other people felt the same type of frustration that I often feel with my parents. I really wished that my parents were more open-minded about careers so that I could become more open-minded about the many more options of life. Its somewhat sad that I only see my future limited to doctor, lawyer, pharmacist and etc, while other people have so many more options.
