mp3: The Raven

In what should probably be called an act of sheer hubris, I recently decided to record a dramatic (perhaps even... too dramatic?) reading of Poe's spooky classic.

I had tried this one before, back in January, but the results were not to my liking, and I had mostly shelved the idea until my dear fenriss nudged me to revive it. Credit her if you like the ( Read more... )

Have you heard Alan Parson's 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination'? It is a musical take on some of Poe's more famous stories (The Raven, The Telltale Heart, The Cask Of Amontillado) and a few I've not heard of before.

If you want a copy, lemme know....

Yeah, that is a neat album. I don't own a copy, but I had a borrowed tape for a while a few years back. I remember that his version of 'The Cask Of Amontillado' was especially spooky-pretty...    :)

One of my favorites, thank you. I was recently lamenting to my roomie about the sadness of the death of Vincent Price, because no one in Hollywood really provides that sort of dripping aural creepiness he did so well in my opinion. Can you recall any currently alive and famous actor with that type of voice?

I wonder sometimes if the percieved creepiness of VP's voice might have a pavlovian component; his voice was very smooth, sometimes even unctuous, but I'm not certain that we would automatically think 'creepy' if not for the wide range of creepy roles he played. I guess the question is moot though - certainly no one in our peer group can claim enough unfamiliarity with Price's work as to be an objective observer.    ;)

That said, I do think that there are quite a few actors still alive and active with voices capable of inspiring those kind of chills. Some of these are actors with naturally powerful voices, e.g. James Earl Jones, or Ian McKellan, while others are skilled voice actors like Mark Hamill, whose take on The Joker is just inspired...

Thanks! The hardest part was trying not to lapse into an imitation of James Earl Jones... or Homer Simpson...

hey, that's really pretty good.

Funnily enough I got a lot out of your reading of it that I didn't catch the first 100 times I heard it.
