New Year ramblings

A week into the new year.

Wonder what I can do that's different this year?

Been spending the holiday getting attached and unattached to things.
Managed to make several conclusions.

Movies
GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra
Disappointing. I think they threw in all the possible clichés for a movie about defeating world domination. And did it badly. Guy trying to impress girl and failing-check, hero and heroine are from opposing sides-check, almost everybody on the team has a sad history and somehow it involves their opponent-check; they managed to ruin a character who had any chance of holding my interest with that one. Hey, writers! Ever heard of making writers enigmatic? Overuse of flashbacks-not related to clichés but... check. I'm not sure what went wrong, but all the punch lines fell flat for me. Maybe the timing was all wrong. And the plot about the villainess turning into a damsel in distress? Urk. Even revealing the real villain did not surprise me. Only things worth watching were the many adrenaline pumping chase scenes. Those were fun. Eccleston was probably wasted in his role there. I'd say this movie is an okay watch if you haven't any high expectations.

2012
Who does not want to write a crossover with Fantastic Children for this?
Fun disaster movie. Kind of unbelievable but fun.

Music & Lyrics
I enjoyed this. I'm not a big fan of Hugh Grant or Drew Barrymore, but they hit it off here. Barrymore was really likable in her anxious and non-anxious way, whatever that means. Laughed over the boy band references. Fluff, redemption.

TV Shows

Life. "I'm not attached to this series. I'm not attached to this series". Life was fun because of Damian Lewis's character Charlie Crews, a police officer who was wrongly imprisoned for 12 years and who chose to return to the force. How can you not love a character that spouts out stuff like:

Corrections Officer #1: Getting' angry, convict?
Charlie Crews: Anger ruins joy, steals the goodness of my mind, forces my mouth to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, leads to a mind without regrets. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.
Correctional officer #2: Are you makin' fun of us?
Charlie Crews: It is the universe that makes fun of us all.

Dani Reese: Why exactly would the universe make fun of us all?
Charlie Crews: Maybe it's insecure.

And the way he frustrates and befuddles people with his Zen philosophy and his obsession with fruit, especially his partner Dani Reese.

Dani Reese: I don't exactly understand you.
Charlie Crews: You don't have to understand here to be here.
Dani Reese: That's what I don't understand.

While it ended regrettably at two seasons, I doubt the show could have continued being popular based on the strength of one character alone. Then again, we have House MD.
Watch the clip that made me a fan, gbrd's Learning How to Bend

Glee. You know you're getting old if you actually like actors/actresses younger than you. Finally, something to replace High School Musical, and if the tweens know what's good for them, they'll like it better. The characters express their feelings an awful lot through music in the school auditorium, but mostly there's a good excuse for them to burst into song; mashups, diva offs, dedications, and one of the more unique ones had Will singing a "message" to Rachel.  Favourite characters would have to be Sue Sylvester(watch how she makes use of everything including her gender to beat Will) and Kurt Hummell(for being himself). Show gets plus points for including the song, "Defying Gravity" from Wicked. If you're not convinced, hold on till episode 4. How the school uses music to revive the football team is pure humour. That aside, I found most of the running subplots annoying, especially those involving deception in relationships.

Time to get back to work.

Oh, and I finally scanlated Chapter 3 for Fantastic Children. I'm really fast, I know.
