Mail.app Outbox Tarpit Mystery Solved!

Every few months for the last several years, this particular problem annoys me enough that I search MacOSXhints and the web in general for a possible solution. The closest thing I've ever found is this hint, but that doesn't describe the situation I've encountered. Maybe that's ( Read more... )

So ... are you using IMAP? I ask because I encountered what sounds like the exact same problem (and same solution) three years ago when trying to use Outlook, Mail.app, and courier IMAP. Only, my problem was with Outlook.

Like you, I assumed the problem was with my mail client, but now I wonder if it's an IMAP-working-offline issue. Because, *even down to the "sending another message would push it through" part,* you've just described my Outlook issue.

I am using IMAP, but I don't think that's the problem, since I've also tried taking the account off/online multiple times in an attempt to clear the blockage.

And, now that I think about it, the fact that the message store is IMAP shouldn't have anything to do with it. The Outbox is a local store of messages waiting to be sent, via SMTP.
