Here follows non-spoilery reviews for the lastest three Torchwood novels, just my humble opinions on them. Yes, I realise I read all three in three days but I have no life. :P
I loved Alexander as a character. Absolutely mental but you couldn't help but love him!
I enjoyed it for the most part, but I agree on you with the Gwen thing - I forgot to mention that in my review. She was still busy looking elsewhere when Rhys was waiting at home for her, something that grated on me and there was enough Ianto in it for me.
Yeah, there were some moments in Bay of the Dead that I did like, and I do enjoy a good Zombie story now and again, but I think they all get a bit samey after a while. I did genuinely enjoy the Rhys & Gwen and Andy moments in the novel, but like we've both said - there was something a bit off about Jack and Ianto's characters like Morris was having trouble connecting with them.
I loved Bay of the Dead, my favourite out of the 3. It felt like Adam to me, as a reader your thrown straight into the action rather then it have a start and slowly build up then have an end. Love the fact that everyone turned into an action hero and that Ianto wasn't one to submit to Jack during one zombie attack.
I also didn't like Into The Silence, I did a review and compared it to the characters in Hush that take away voices but in a much more brutal way and Small Worlds because of the end to the creature.
The House That Jack built, I wasn't fond of as much as I hoped. Not sure what it is, will need a re-read to work that out.
As for relationships I believe Ianto and Jack refer to each other as friends rather then lovers a lot throughout these 3 books, although I do see why Ianto introduced Jack that way to Sarah. It was the professional relationship that Ianto is stating to strangers not his personal one.
Oh and Ebay has copies, I showed off Bay of the Dead to James Moran!!
I don't know about Bay of the Dead, I was put off by the start of it and how Jack, Ianto, Gwen & Rhys were slightly out of character and I think that jaded me for the rest of the novel. Although there were some moments - mainly Gwen, Rhys & Andy - that I genuinely thought were brilliant, but something jarred with me and Jack & Ianto's characters.
True I'd admit Into the Silence was sort of taken from other aspects of Sci-fi but I think it was the loneliness and the condition of the human race that shone through in this novel, and was possibly why I enjoyed it so much.
I completely understand about Ianto saying to Sarah that Jack was his friend because he was in a professional mindset, but the fact that they were refering to each other as 'friends' in their heads was what grated with me.
I think the copies on e-bay are the pre-release copies before they've been through their final edit.
Well we rarely if ever see Ianto as a field agent especially with Jack so I thought it was good, also seeing body parts like I'd be sick and so can see where Ianto's come from as he's new to field ops as he's either been behind a desk or in the Hub rarely see the full effects of crime scenes.
As for Gwen, she woke up in bed with Rhys and went out to investigate. I think that's very Gwen also when she grudgingly lets Rhys come.
PC Andy on the other hand goes from the character we know to something completely different, almost like the authors trying to make him out to be the dim blond.
Can't belive you finished all 3 lol. I have only got couple of pages to go on on into silence I like it but not my favourite book is going to take some doing to beat Twilight Street and Almost perfect.
I have no life, also I don't really sleep, so that helps! :P Yeah Into the Silence wasn't my fav but I did enjoy it. And I think you'll enjoy the House that Jack Built. ;)
Thanks for the reviews! I need to put a lot of thought before I actually order any more novels. I'm through with spending loads of money with shipping and being regret afterwards. You're not the first person who says Bay of the Dead is far from being one of the best books. I believe I'm slightly inclined to only order The House that Jack Built. I don't know if I still have patience to read books treating the characters like they were by the beginning of season two. They've changed and grown so much since then, I often feel like I'd be better off reading fanfiction for free. But your description of Into the Silence has made me curious. I'll be checking out for more. Thanks! ;)
I would definitely recommend the House that Jack Built if you're only thinking of buying one out of all 3. It was modt definitely the best out of the lot, and to me read like a Torchwood episode - angst and humour galore!
