NaNo '14

Well, it’s that time of year again, where I actually get on Livejournal and post something, because it’s tradition and I have nowhere else to put this. Where I tell about me winning NaNoWriMo again, and then try to remember all the crap I wanted to put in this journal throughout the month. Or the day, depending. I know I’ll forget to mention ( Read more... )

It is a shame that we don't use our LJs more often, but they're perfect for end-of-NaNo reflections like this. It'd be even better if we could remember everything we wanted to talk about, too, but sometimes that doesn't happen. I can appreciate that. :P

Anyway, to get down to business, I, of course, loved Genetic Experiment 1004 (or is it just Genetic Experiment now?). Bri was a really interesting character, especially since she had to deliberately hide herself, which lead to a lot of juicy internal conflict later on (or would have, if Damien wasn't so stubborn! :P)

I think the only thing that really shocked me was the whole Space (Neo)Nazis, because that was truly unexpected. (That being said, in hindsight, COSMOS' experimentations gels perfectly with the whole racist Aryan ideal…I wouldn't want to be the one to point out to Sedgwick that the whole Aryan/Nordic ideology of the Nazis was absolute batshit insanity, and has no scientific merit (William would be appalled at this shoddy science :P). Of course at this point I really ( ... )

It sort of weird - I consider the NaNo version to be GE 1004, because it sounds cooler, and I consider everything I’m going to do after it to be simply GE. But whatever. We’ve been using GE for it for so long that I doubt it matters. I sort of felt like the whole hiding herself thing was sort of unnecessary, but at the same time, you could see why it was necessary for her to do so. It also sort of leads into something that’ll be revealed later in the series, so hopefully I can make it all make sense. ;P

Yeah, the Space Nazi thing was that idea that the boyfriend came up with right before November. We were discussing something, and he brought up the fact that the Nazi were doing genetic experiments - which is common knowledge - so that they could create the perfect race, not because they believed it already existed. And then I realized that’s exactly what COSMOS was doing, and I figured it’d make a little sense to have that idea sort of…still floating around. Even if I make it something like some idiot found an ancient text on ( ... )

Its sort of sad, because the way I have it, Damien is madder because she isn’t stupid than revealing that she wasn’t born on Demeter, which is a worse offence in their eyes. Which suggests that he was only after her because he wanted someone slow and dim witted. ;P I hoped that the idea that he was mad that she lied and then just forgot to tell her he wasn’t anymore as he was trying to reevaluate the whole situation was apparent, because that’s what happened. And then when he found out she was an off-worlder, he was mad at first, because she was still lying to him, but I guess it just made all the lying make sense, and he…wasn’t overly mad. And then she’s kidnapped, and it just…doesn’t matter anymore… He just needs to get her back.

Imagine his embarrassment when he realizes he’s been jealous of her brother. ;P

The dragons seemed important enough to me, but I agree that it can be hard to include them in the story. Especially since, say, a lot of action occurs indoors, where Sid can't go. Not to mention that Damien doesn't take Bri to meet with his wing very often, so it can be hard. But you also have a point, in that when you have a scene with a lot of characters in them, it can be hard to keep track of them all. I liked her interaction with Sapphros, though -- he couldn't speak, but he could communicate with her in other ways. And he was always there, to the point where you can definitely see the bond between them. That could be just me, but I liked it ( ... )

The dragons were supposed to have a larger role, and they might in GO and GC, because she has more free reign, and she’s considered a part of Damien’s wing now. I want to make the dragons more of a focus, but really, the nature of the story makes it so they’re actually second fiddle. As for Sapphros, it was like you knew he was always there, I guess, but I’d forgot he was, and…yeah. Forget to mention him at times. But I guess knowing their Bond and that he’s always there helps with that ( ... )
