Well, I hate to say it but many abusers won't stop simply because education. Reality has it the self defense and protection is the only potential protection, and even that isn't a guarantee.
Sometimes fighting can make it worse. There's no real right answer because there will always be bullies and abusers, it's human nature whether we want to accept it or not.
I was abused and bullied, and no amount of teaching prevention can save you. It does not work. And as cynical as i am, i do not honestly believe that it is an ingrained part of human nature. Are some people just assholes, yes. But i don't believe that bully culture is part of human biology. I'm not saying it could be fixed in a generation or even 5, but if the entire culture worked toward the proper way of acting, it would be eradicated in maybe 20 generations, each improving upon the previous. But then at the same time...people don't give a fuck, so while it COULD happen, it never will.
I was bullied in high school, abused by an ex, nearly raped more than once and on more than one occasion standing up for myself worked. It didn't always, but that's what I said, it's imperfect and it's not a solution. It's reactionary and thus isn't a prevention. Neither is education or jail. They are also reactionary and imperfect for we humans are imperfect. We crave different things, or personalities are different as is our intelligence, mental and physical health.
What your discussing is a utopia that can never exist. Inherently we are a violent race even though many of us like to suggest we are somehow more evolved. Where there is equality and fear in anything, and there always will be, there will be violence.
Call it cynical if you will, I call it realistic. Don't get me wrong I believe people are responsible for their actions and should be held responsible. I believe that most people are mostly decent and education can help in SOME areas and for some people, buts no prevention.
I'm not talking about a utopia without wars or pain, i'm talking about a world without needless, disproportional violence. Fighting is necessary in some cases. But i think you'd agree that rape never is. We accept that such violence and hate is part of what we are, which is why we teach PROTECTION and not PREVENTION. But what if we actually thought for a second, what if it isn't? What if we actually did start teaching prevention? Not to adults, not even to teens, but to kids, little kids. And if they grew up to teach their kids prevention instead of protection, if that continued, what would the result be? A hell of a lot better than the way things are now if nothing else. The problem now is the paradigm of society is flawed. We accept that the worst actions humans perpetrate are unchangable. This is how we are. But why is that the case? Why are we "this way?" And why is that inalterable? What if it actually isn't, but the only reason we think it is is because we don't question otherwise?
