I thought that a number of the images in the film were quite poetic and moving, but they cut a lot of content. I loved the narrative of the novel, how it was nonlinear, and I felt the film lost a lot by not attempting to do the same. I also feel that the film focused too much upon Candy's descent into the lowlife, where I felt the novel was more of a testimony about the nature of addiction itself. By making the focus of the film the tragedy of a young, artistic girl from a good background, a lot of what made the novel so meaningful -- the Italicized chapters that were the unnamed narrator's musings, the gritty details such as crabs and hepatitis, and an examination of what sort of characters find opiates pleasurable -- was lost.
