how do you convey seriousness, without coming across as controlling?

What's wrong with coming across as controlling? You are the parent, after all, and she needs to know that. To quote my mother, it's not a democracy. Hahahaha no, don't turn into my mother. :-D

Distraction still works pretty well with Marie, but sometimes not so much. If I see her going towards something dangerous, I say, "Marie! Let's color!" Sometimes I see her reflect that, as she heads toward something like an outlet and then suddenly wants to play with a doll or whatever
