Deranged by phone calls last thing at night and first thing in the morning at home and all day at the office, I limp about aimlessly to avoid them for a bit, thinking about aches and pains and wondering whether to read a book about pain by Alphonse Daudet I’ve had for years, picked up cheap in ?Julian Barnes translation at Camden School For Girls

the only thing i know abt alphonse daudet = that he was one o' them "literary syphilitics" - so he may well be a v.learned authority on pain

frank p = frank peaviss? ( - another one of the peaviss population...? ) - surely n.america, china & some other places = the life of variety

why do ppl get such grief abt dyeing their hair? - it seems to me to be an eminently sensible thing to to ( if you've got any hair ) - mind you, b.oddie = pretty awful ( i expect he's "a national treasure" like glarkson & j.oliver )

Actually, smart guy, as far as I remember, Tartarin was always CLAIMING to have been fighting lions!
