My tutor and I had a chat yesterday regrading whether I want to step up to the degree course. I need to make a decision by next Friday. As far as my academic work to date goes I am getting good enough marks to do the degree, and if I keep it up I am on track for a 2:1 or 2:2.
The difficulty is that if I go up to degree I lose my bursary, and get income an assessed bursary plus student loan. This means going into even more debt, which does seem a bit stupid at present. However, the job market is very very bad at present. This leads me to think that I should consider the implications of not having a degree in nursing when trying to get a job.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council has decreed that they want all nurses to be degree educated, but have not as yet specified whether that is is a degree or degree in nursing. The upshot is that if I don't do the degree now, I may have to do it later. To make things even more complicated other institutions already have degree only students, so if I am to compete I want a more level playing field.
In summary, if I do the degree I will be more broke, and have a lot less spare time, but perhaps more chance of being employable. If I don't do the degree I won't be increasing my debt, but may stuff up future job prospects.
Aaaaarrrgggggghhhhhhh!!!!
