why pick me?

Zachary started practicing cursive a few weeks ago. There was no prompting from us (Stacey and my cursive writing is atrocious), he just wanted to know it in case he has to learn it someday. I wonder if it is even a useful life skill anymore… typing seems to be more useful, but I don’t think we’ll be typing a dozen years from now. Maybe he’s ( Read more... )

I was Principality scribe twice and Kingdom scribe once (though not for very long at the kingdom level), and it's not a terribly onerous job. I highly recommend always having pen and ink handy, plus whatever scrolls need signing, at events. Now that the internet is used so much, and there are kingdom and principality Facebook groups, it will be a lot easier to send out a list of who you're looking for before the event, so you have a better chance of getting the scrolls signed that weekend.

I think you should do it. It's not a lot of work, it's a good service, and you get to see some interesting scrolls.

a) It really isn't a big job. You don't *have to* go to all the scriptoria unless you want to.
b) Making scrolls counts as service.
c) Eh, it means going to Investiture (best place for sigs and delivery).
d) See c
e) Almost none of the undelivered scrolls are for active people. If an old bird shows up, get a phone number or email address.
f, g) Teaching isn't a requirement; it's really just the administrative part: getting sigs, tracking down the Herald for sigs and seals.

1) If you don't wanna, you don't wanna. There's nothing wrong with that. :) You are certainly contributing to the College of Scribes!

I have problems with b. While going to Kinko's is a service, and gathering signatures is service, and playing games on the scribal website is service, using your brush or pen to create a unique pretty item by hand doesn't hit the same chords with me. Not every item will be great art, but with time, you might create something special now and then.

Just because you enjoy doing it, doesn't mean it doesn't have to get done. The act is art, the delivery is service.

I’m not a scribe so I don’t really have a clue about what this office entails. But my two cents is don’t take the office. Going from hardly attending events and worried about spending enough time with your family to “must attend 4-6 events a year” and “must haul enough stuff around to make blowing in and out on your motorcycle impossible” sounds like it will result in resentment.
I understand about wanting to help, and living up to the peerage you have. But taking on a job you don’t sound enthusiastic about is not something I would recommend.

The number of the events is just what I would expect to have to attend, not really changing what I usually attend. And yes, I couldn't do it on the motorcycle.

I don't want to just do the job, I want to do it well.

Well I think you would be good at it, and traveling to all the scribal workshops might be fun but definitely isn't necessary. I have watched Eliska with the job and Maria before that and I didn't see that it was onerous for either of them them.

Many years ago I held Principality Chatelaine and then the Arts Office, which together ran 5 years consecutively which is a long time but 6 events a year just for that was pretty easy. True I didn't have to haul stuff around, but did have to run competitions for the Arts.

Lastly I think you would do a good job in the Office.

I know you'll be good at it if you decide to take the job.
Good luck to you!
