I am going to fret a little bit here.

My son really likes Hockey, and although he started about a year and a half ago, he has surpassed many of his peers in the 9-10 age range (the squirt league), and many have been skaing since they were 4. I think as long as you guys continue to do exactly what you're doing he'll grow up to be a very good example. If you don't want him to be a goon I would casually suggest more skill and finesse work as opposed to just Lowering his shoulder. When I read that it brought to mind all of the finesse work Steve and others were doing with me because just because I was big it didn't mean I had to act like I was big.

You're very crafty and you think of things differently than other people do and I would suggest that you use that to challenge him in subtle ways if that's what he wants.

The support you're giving him to pursue his sport (that is not a super fun drive) is a pretty big gift.

Don't knock your lack of sport background. He doesn't need it.

I've learned a little bit about hockey from watching Jeannie's games. You know, Jeannie, who went from never skating at all to becoming an all-hockey-all-the-time woman, who jumped up a league way ahead of everyone else? I think your boy has been bitten by the same bug. Hang on and enjoy the ride.
