Finder, by Carla Speed McNeil. I got it at Kinokuniya a while back and it is awesome.

I don't really have anything great to recommend. The last book I read, The Diamond Age, is certainly relevant here, but as it was by Stephenson I assume you've probably read it twice already =/

P.S. I think this is why I like reading Stephenson so much. I am drawn to sci-fi through its technological aspects and want to read about the social effects of it in an alternate world. Snow Crash and The Diamond Age just gave me so much more than I was expecting on both counts. (I haven't even touched Cryptonomicon yet!)

I've been listening to a few podcasts from Escape Pod lately and that may be a good way to be introduced to short, new ideas while commuting or making dinner or gardening or whatever, though short stories may not give you the depth of illustration you're looking for.

I could proceed to list authors/books I've read recently and explain why they may also not be what you're looking for just in case there's something that interests you, but I'll stop here =)
