I dunno about the rest of y'all, but I suspect labor unions are at fault here.

I can't vouch for Michigan, since that includes the auto-industry which is completely fucked on both sides of the table, but I do know that the presence of unions when I lived in Minnesota resulted in me receiving higher starting pay than I ever would back here in NC. Even though I never joined one, I was still able to benefit from union presence.
