and today I realized that this Death Cab For Cutie song sounds a whole lot like Rush. in fact, like a specific song that I can't quite place right now. any idea, John?

I'm not sure about a specific Rush song, but it definitely sounds like something from their Counterparts or Test For Echo albums. Also, the singer sounds like Geddy after he dropped his screeching vocals. The guitar sound is also reminiscent of Alex's in many of the songs from those two albums.

I can't think of the song you might be thinking of because I don't know Rush's later stuff as well as I do their earlier songs. The DC4C song is too mellow for matching pre-Presto, or post Test For Echo Rush.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but at least I've narrowed the area of search.

Yup...that was my impression as well. I kept waiting for the DC4C song to get a bit more...up-tempo.
