Against his wishes, L misses the weight of the handcuffs.(Eh, as soon as I posted it I saw three things I wanted to edit! Here's a slightly different version.)
The loss of the weight of the handcuffs is his own choice, and he doesn't miss them... not psychologically, at any rate. Still, it rankles that his arm feels weightless, uncomfortable, as if something is absent.
He folds his hand under his torso during his first attempt at sleep. When that turns out to be unhelpful, he encircles his wrist with the long fingers of his other hand, and spends the next night that way.
The gesture is pointless. It doesn't work, and he understands that he'll have to let the feeling pass with time. There is small consolation in the relief of his occasional freedom from Yagami's presence: a few minutes to himself, here and there.
What he has lost, though, is possibility.
Yagami is Kira -- regardless of any capture of Higuchi -- and the tantalizing prospect of securing his conviction was a promise wrapped around L's wrist. Now, the promise is broken, and unless something can be managed, Yagami will go free.
L wonders how to disprove the lines of text that exonerate Light. Just a few lines of text... easy to add... what if they are a lie, like all of the other lies in the space between them? It would make sense, but how to be sure?
Something weighty comes to mind, and L smiles as he falls asleep.
