Only human again

His dreams had been strange. Muted colors, the entire world skewed in weird ways he couldn’t pinpoint, like everything was too tall or he was too short. And the impression, through it all, that he was something other than human. At some point these images shifted, settled into the more familiar images of his usual dreamscape, that impression ( Read more... )

Zach jerked away in Chris' bed as there was a flash of light from the door opening, then stomping, then gagging. He looked around the room, realizing he didn't have his replicated glasses or contacts in and could only see a blur, and tried to figure out what was going on. He stared in the direction of the bathroom, wincing at the sound of someone throwing up.

"...Karl?" Zach murmured as he stood up, walking across the room and flipping on the light switch.

There was a surreal moment as he stared at Chris' naked, but blurry, backside. It was another moment before he realized it wasn't Karl at all, but, "Chris?!"

Zach moved over, kneeling beside Chris, a hand on his back. "Chris, is that really you? Are you okay?"

His stomach still heaving, Chris didn't hear Zach at first, but that hand on his back was soothing. Soon enough he was able to sit back, his knees pulled up to his chest as he concentrated on breathing hard and making sense of yet another impossibility.

"I think so," he croaked. "Just... tell me I wasn't really a cat."

Zach reached out and hit to flush the toilet, unable to hide the look of worry on his face. "Not unless you want me to lie to you," he said quietly. "You were really more of a kitten, actually."

Chris shivered a little as he nodded, not sure why that made him feel better. The memories were making an odd sort of sense now that he realized the feeling of not being human had been accurate. He sighed, looking over at Zach with a tiny smile. "I sort of remember it," he said. "But it's... weird." A gross understatement if ever there was one.

He blinked, realizing Zach was sitting there in his pajamas. He was a little out of focus, Chris finally noticed, his contacts evidently having gone the same way as his clothes. "Sorry I woke you," Chris mumbled. His cheeks tinged pink.
