And, what purpose do they serve? I'm curious as to your reasoning.

They serve to make you feel better about yourself when they prove themselves to be total dumbasses. Even if they last a while looking smart, eventually they'll slip up and become unable to carry one the charade. It's quite amusing at times. So.. amusement being a secondary purpose. But, hell, I don't read minds. I don't know what the guy above was gonna say. Just giving my thoughts.
