The force of obsession...

Or obsession with the force

I am aware that I have a somewhat obsessive nature. Not that I obsess over life in general, but that I tend to latch onto one thing and live in it until it has run its course. Being who I am, this usually (but not always) involves a sci-fi or fantasy book/film/show.

My current obsession is Star Wars. I saw the original films as a child and the prequels not long after they came out (and I have all 6 on DVD) so this is not new to me but sometimes it happens like this. I pick up on something long after I first saw it and something grabs me.

I must admit (with some reluctance) that this often centres around one particular character. Well, personalities do fascinate me, after all. So, at the moment, I am interested in the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

A figure both heroic and tragic, he demonstrates many of the qualities that I admire and would emulate if I were less self indulgent. The sense of responsibility, the swift intellect, the dry wit (often appearing in apparently inappropriate moments), the detached compassion and paradoxical inability to detach completely (he loved Anakin as a brother), the humble dignity, and above all the extraordinary self control.

Not everyone appreciates these qualities (Anakin certainly didn't!) They seem to think him cold and uncaring. That annoys me. I guess I see something of myself in his character and take those comments a bit personally. Is it so difficult to understand that we are not all the same?

scifi/fantasy, thinks, personality
