Selfish Me

Dec 18, 2004 00:16

Today I was at my favorite coffee shop. I got great parking as always, and as I was organizing all that I needed to bring in with me, I noticed a man. A homeless man. I see him there often, though pay little attention. I overlook him as I am sure most of the patrons of the establishment do. Possibly the same way we overlook a stain on the ( Read more... )

Awww sweety buns. ;) who cares if it was a selfish act? Anything you do should be within your self interests, otherwise why should you even bother? There's selfish deeds for yourself and then there's selfish deeds for others. By comparison, choosing the latter isn't selfish.

You come first, love. ;)

You never took the time to notice this man? You never took the steps to brighten his day? Perhaps there is no such thing as being totally altruistic, but as I see it, stepping outside of your normal comfort zone for even a minute is more than most people do their entire lives.

It seems to me that the most important thing is that your eyes are open to these sorts of things. You were kind to a stranger...the motivation is irrelevant, imo. I understand the guilt, the shame, but I think that it does no good in the long run to dwell on such feelings. Just continue to be the caring, empathetic, aware human being that you are. In the long run, that true self is what people see.

You did good.

I like this post a lot.

I don't think you were selfish in the least bit. There's no written law that says one must have a conversation with whoever buys them a drink...some people choose to, but I don't really think its a faux pas to decline. It was nice of you to buy him the coffee itself.

I remember seeing a sitcom episode (was it on Friends?) where the characters are all trying to do an unselfish good deed, but they can't because each time they do something nice they either recieve praise or feel good about themselves.

Of course, you can't go very far into that without hitting some serious philosophy...and it's far too noisy at my house for anything of the sort.
