It seems to me that the most important thing is that your eyes are open to these sorts of things. You were kind to a stranger...the motivation is irrelevant, imo. I understand the guilt, the shame, but I think that it does no good in the long run to dwell on such feelings. Just continue to be the caring, empathetic, aware human being that you are. In the long run, that true self is what people see.

I don't think you were selfish in the least bit. There's no written law that says one must have a conversation with whoever buys them a drink...some people choose to, but I don't really think its a faux pas to decline. It was nice of you to buy him the coffee itself.

Of course, you can't go very far into that without hitting some serious philosophy...and it's far too noisy at my house for anything of the sort.
