I rarely, (ok - never) send letters to the editor but today after reading the comments to this article got fed up to the point where I had to fire one off: No and Hell No - Just Say No to Both Viaduct Measures

I should probably point out that the Embarcadero freeway was nearly completely destroyed during the 7.1 earthquake in '89. I'm not entirely sure upward planning is the reason they didn't rebuild it.

Yea - but the point is still there - how much money would they have spent rebuilding it vs. how much money it brought back to the city by not having it there anymore.

i use a similar example when the library wants to create "more study space". if you build it - they will sit there.

I'm not sure I understand? You mean that people complain that there's not enough study space, so they remove books and shelves and put in more, then more people come to study...

Heh, eventually you'd just end up with a big empty room like a gymnasium with nothing but tables and chairs and a sign outside that says "Library"

pretty much. as soon as a library creates more seating space - it's full. it's like a highway - you put in a new lane, and before you know it, it'll be even more congested. i think it's like what you said - if there's limited study space - only people who really need to study will use it. but when the library is this huge place full of seating and couches and study areas - people who don't really NEED to study will start using the space just to hang out/nap, etc.
