Picture Prompt: Ring/Book
I work in a library. As you may have guessed, that means I deal with books on a regular basis. When ‘business’ is slow - as it usually is, since most people don’t seem very keen on reading these days - I will walk around and pick up stray books that people have forgotten to put back on their proper shelf.
One time, I happened upon a dictionary laying open on one of the tables. When I picked it up, something fell to the floor. I knelt down to pick it up and found a thin, gold band. I assumed it was someone’s misplaced wedding ring, so after I put the dictionary back, I brought it back to the check-out desk and asked one of my co-workers, Audra, if there had been anyone who asked about a lost ring. After she popped her gum at me, she said no.
With a shrug, I’d slipped the gold ring into a drawer, in case anyone came looking for it and went back to work. At the end of the evening, I went back to the front desk to shut down the computers and saw the ring sitting on the counter. Thinking someone else had moved it, for whatever reason, I placed it back in the drawer and went about turning the computers off.
Once I was home, I went to my room and emptied out my pockets, placing the contents on the bedside table. To my surprise, that very same gold ring from the library rolled in a circle on the surface before slowly settling itself down. I stared at it, warily. The thought that it was stalking me crossed my mind briefly, but I pushed that notion away. It was an inanimate object, and a Muggle one at that, as far as I could tell. If it wasn’t, then I suppose it could have been charmed to follow whoever touched it. Whatever the case, I snatched it up and brought it into the bathroom. Without another thought, I dropped it into the toilet and flushed.
I did not like the idea of being stalked by a ring.
