Interesting. I took back the use of my first name in a similar situation, after having insisted on going by AJ for the preceding 15 years and having a time when I would more readily respond to my SCA first name than my real first name.
I'm still not sure how I feel about it, and sometimes I introduce myself as AJ and sometimes as Anneke. It's weird.
I have name-identity issues too, actually. My real name is long and no one who isn't Russian can't really pronounce it (actually, it's more like they don't even try to!) so for the longest time, all most of my legal papers, even my social security card had my nickname on it. At some point the process started to change it to my full name and now in my grad school records, my full first name is used for the first time, and I don't even know which nickname to use! I have two nicknames. In my grad school, there are too many people who have my usual nickname, so I go by my the nickname I use with family and some friends, and it gets confusing : (.
A friend of mine legally changed her name to "Chaos" a few years ago, though she'd been known as Chaos online for about a decade or maybe more. She is against anyone who doesn't accept using her birth name.

Good luck with your name. It's not easy for me.
