Ah, the future.

Something about late nights always lead to too much thinking. Right now, it's about ~The Future, as you do. Right now, my declared major for college in September is chemical engineering. Thing is, I was looking at the curriculum for the four years, and I realized that I am literally not interested in any of it, except for the couple of classes of ( Read more... )

You know what would actually be "A Waste"? You spending years doing and training for something you don't even like. I think the best course of action is always at the intersection of "what you want to do" and "what it's possible to do." I know you know that, but it can be helpful to have someone else tell you that you really, truly should do what makes you happy.

I'm in this exact same spot, bb. I would love to do something creative as a career, like photography or writing, but I know that it just wouldn't be financially viable, so I'm stuck with psychology, which just gets more and more unappealing with each semester that I study it :\ I hope we both figure it out soon before we waste years of our life studying to be something we're not even sure we want to be ♥

I realize that you are probably going to get tons of people telling you that doing what you love is way, way better than doing something that you believe is going to make you money/be a successful career point, so I'm not going to beat that dead horse -- but it's something I definitely think you ought to know and think about. I nearly got talked into doing Something Practical with my degree rather than things I wanted to do, and I'm so glad I dodged that bullet ( ... )

I personally know people who majored in engineering whose hearts weren't into it, and they didn't have a great time in college and don't have jobs related to their majors now. Not that that would happen to everybody, but I don't want you to throw yourself into something you don't even enjoy. Keep yourself in mind. ♥

I realize that I so do not put my money where my mouth is with this, since I'm doing that whole ridiculously prestigious graduate school thing, but I am a huge believer in trade school. If that is what you like to do, do it. This insistence of our society on everyone having a college degree or twelve is absurd. We need people who work with their hands and people who push paper and people who attempt science and, well, we could maybe do without people like me who end up hunched over in archives in Europe, but our lives would be poorer for it. If what you'd like to do is trade school, fuck everyone and do it.
