I just realized I should have held off on watching Iron Man until this released, but oh well! I saw it last night and I want to see it again sometime soon, so I doubt there will be any in-depth comments below, but non-spoilery response: There are plenty of things to criticize, but I loved it.
MARVEL WTF WAS THAT INTRO I'M NOT MEANT TO START CRYING BEFORE YOUR GODDAMN LOGO SHOWS UP. My theater cheered hard at the Stan Lee thank you, though, which was nice.
I was supposed to come out of that with Carol & Maria being Monica's two mommies, right? BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I CAME OUT OF IT WITH.
Obviously, a part of what made me love this was the 90s nostalgia and relatable jokes that came along with it. (Also, leather + jeans + flannel is one of the aesthetics that made me go: Oh, right, totally queer, so it was great to see that on her. UNF.)
I really did not like Larson's casting originally, because I wanted an older Carol Danvers. I still want that, but I ended up loving this Danvers, too. The way she kept setting her jaw during everything, humor and anger and sadness, made my day. She played things so dry most of the time, too, and I loved that.
FURY + CATS = 4EVER<3
For the most part, I liked the use of the songs. I love taking bouncy fun songs and turning them into fight songs in particular, so I had some fun with that.
I still have SO MANY emotions about Carol, Maria, and Monica. Maria talking about what's hard! Monica clinging to Carol! Maria having to tell that painful story and then listen to the black box! The flashes we see of Maria and Carol together, dancing and singing and drinking and flying and fighting.
MARIA GETTING TO GO INTO THE STARS HELLO MOVIE HERE IS MY HEART SINCE YOU HAVE RIPPED ME WIDE OPEN.
God, Fury was everything. Loving cats! Diagonal toast! Those moments when he realized the Skrulls were around him and using him to get to Danvers! His Initiative being named after her! Fury trusting the cat not to eat him! I just -- I love younger Fury and his passion and his snark and his awe over things.
MARIA AND CAROL OH MY GOD I SHIP THEM SO HARD. I ship Fury in there, too, and the three of them in so many combinations but MARIA AND CAROL! MARIA THOUGHT SHE'D BURIED HER PARTNER! MONICA HAS TWO MOMMIES! MARIA AND CAROL HAVING TO SAY GOOD-BYE AGAIN BECAUSE CAROL HAS TO GO DO THIS THING SHE THINKS IS IMPORTANT AND RIGHT. SO MANY FEELINGS.
I love a fall down/stand up montage, and I have to say, visually, one of the trailers did it a lot better than it actually came across in the movie, but it was still pretty great. And Danvers with her powers no longer fettered was AMAZING, glowy and powerful and punchy and everything I wanted from this version of her.
Danvers being the punch first and second and third is one of my favorite character types for women, ,and I got it, and she was wonderful.
The Skrull forehead press, ugh, my heart.
The fight on the train and the other people trying to stop her despite the fact that little old lady is seriously kicking her ass, too, cracked me the fuck up.
MAR-VELL WAS A FUCKING WOMAN AND AMAZING AND SMART AND STRONG AND BADASS AND TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
In fact, all of them. ALL OF THEM. Mar-Vell and Maria and Carol and Monica, they are all trying to do good, right things in their own ways. Hell, even the Kree are trying to do what they think is right, and so are the Skrulls, and I loved all of that so much.
Carol is swaggery, cocky, smart, emotional, heavy hitting, dry, and all of these things are good. They are what she is and they do not need to be controlled to make her the best her she can be, because she is already that by being true to those things. HELLO FEELINGS AND IDENTIFYING HARD WITH A CHARACTER.
Monica was one of my favorite child characters ever.
I would watch a billion more movies about Carol, Maria, and Monica getting up to trouble.
Before the premiere, even, I saw a bunch of complaints that it was propaganda for the US Air Force. Which it is. But if you are only just now complaining about US military propaganda in the MCU, where the fuck have you been? I don't like the MCU's military industrial complex, but it has been there from the beginning, it is baked into the stories (and into Hollywood in general), and if you're only now complaining about it, all you make me think is that you don't care when it's about the dudes, but god forbid women be involved.
CAPTAIN FUCKING MARVEL WILL RETURN. YOU'D BETTER FUCKING BELIEVE IT.
I was terrified that one of the stingers would be Maria and Monica turning to dust AND IT WAS NOT THAT THANK FUCK.
Tesseract timeline: So it was hidden, found during Captain America, lost again at the end of Captain America and then ??? Found by Mar-Vell?
