Let's say we figured out how to simulate a human brain on a computer. We have build a highly realistic virtual world, where simulated people live ( Read more... )

"Is it real?" is an impractical question in that context.
More practical question is: "Can it affect the quality of our lives?".

1. If you spend a lot of time in that virtual world, it can make you sad.

2. It can affect the quality of life of other people (virtual ones).

Does it make it a real rain?

... or happy.
As with any life.

> Does it make it a real rain?

It depends on definition of word "real".

Anyway, you are asking a wrong question.

“It depends on definition of word "real".

And what makes a “definition”?

“Anyway, you are asking a wrong question.”

How there can be “wrong” or “right” questions? It’s like there is “wrong” or “right” reality.

“Can we say the simulated people are real?”

Can you say what reality is, or better, what existence is? Find out: if you can’t then your question has no meaning. Can’t you see an irremovable paradox?

This is about the same:

“"If a tree falls down in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

If you’ve said “tree” and “forest” it means that you ARE there, and there is a “noise”, otherwise this phrase has no meaning as well. The same paradox.

What is this about? It’s not easy to talk about things you are talking. If possible at all.
