The prompt for this story was “Clock,” submitted by rosefyre. This story fits into the current chapter of Already In Progress. There are no spoilers.

Rating: G

Dramatis Personae
Troy Langerak, MVP, owner of a gym, and solidly into his Elder years
Sally Couderc, his wife, also solidly into her Elder years

Setting
The living room of the house, which is what you walk directly into when you open the front door. Troy has just arrived home from work.

SALLY: Welcome home! How was your day at work?
TROY: It was okay. (moves his jaw side to side experimentally) Mauser clocked me in the face at practice, hard as he could.
SALLY: Oh my Esme! Why? I thought you two got along!
TROY We do. It was just an accident. And then I didn’t get out of the way fast enough. That part was my fault. (runs his hand over his face) Do I have a bruise coming?
(Sally peers at him closely)
SALLY: No.
TROY: Didn’t think I would. (prods his jaw, then shrugs) Maybe it’s time to start thinking about retirement.
SALLY: Oh! (philosophically) …Well, that might not be so bad, really. You’re not as young as you used to be, and you could devote more time to the gym. You’ll have a good pension coming. (perking up) Maybe we can travel more.
(Troy stares at her blankly)
TROY: I was talking about Mauser. He hit me as hard as he could and it’s not even tender. Why would you think I was talking about me?

NOTE: “To clock” is slang for “to hit.” I will sometimes say that I got “clocked” in the face at aikido class, which means that I got hit in the face. (No damage so far, luckily. I usually catch a stray elbow that I can’t get out of the way of fast enough, but that’s how you learn to get faster, no?)
