Myshuno! 2014 Prompt: "I met a girl who sang the blues..." (385 words)

Dec 28, 2014 22:13

The prompt for this story was “I met a girl who sang the blues/And I asked her for some happy news/She just smiled and turned away,” submitted by muletothefoxxes. This story fits into an upcoming chapter of Ruth’s (un)Officially Wacky Boolprop Challenge. It definitely contains spoilers, although not for Official Plot Points.

Rating: G

Dramatis Personae
Casilda Shankel, aspiring graphic novel writer
Her Sister’s Girlfriend, an aspiring graphic novel artist (and also as described)

Setting
The art building on campus. Casilda is waiting nervously as her sister’s girlfriend reads her script.

CASILDA: So, what do you think?
GIRLFRIEND: It looks like there’s ten pages with no dialog. Is that right?
CASILDA: I don’t think it comes out to that many, but there’s several.
GIRLFRIEND: But there’s all this stuff going on. You’ve got panel after panel of a blues singer performing and you don’t want any lyrics? You don’t even want background music? Like notes or something?
CASILDA: No. See, it’s symbolic? Because it all died in the plane crash, with the others?
GIRLFRIEND: (shrugs) I’m not a writer. Now, this blues singer. How do you want her to look?
CASILDA: Like Billie Holiday crossed with Janis Joplin?
GIRLFRIEND (sarcastically): Well, that’s not two completely different looks or anything.
CASILDA: No, see, in this panel with the closeup on the hair, I want the flower in the hair and the wave like Billie Holliday. And then in this panel with the closeup on the glasses, I want those round glasses like Janis Joplin wore.
GIRLFRIEND: Hmmmm… and for the top, I could do something like this… (sketches quickly)
CASILDA: That’s perfect! You’re a genius.
GIRLFRIEND: Yeah, I know.

Note: The sister in question has not yet gone to college post-rebuild - heck, I haven’t even added a Uni yet after the second rebuild - so I don’t know yet what the girlfriend’s name will be. But she will have one, of that I am quite certain.

The song that the lyric is from is American Pie by Don McLean. It’s almost nine minutes long, and the lyric comes in the last verse, but it’s well worth checking out. The popular theory is that the “girl who sang the blues” was Janis Joplin, but I pictured her as Billie Holiday for years before I knew that.

"Storyboarding" is the act of planning out each shot in a movie or a graphic novel: angle, lighting, who and what you'll see...
