Dramatis Personae
Beaudelaire Rossi, a Teen
Genevive Rossi, his older sister
Ygraine Rossi, their mother, close to Elder
The family does not have very much money, and a picnic in the park is about as much entertainment as they can afford.

Setting
The Sandersville Municipal Park. Ygraine, Genevive, and Beaudelaire have just finished a picnic in honor of Genevive’s birthday; she is now an Adult. Ygraine is so exhausted that she has fallen asleep at the edge of the blanket.

BEAUDELAIRE: So what are you going to do now that you’re officially a grown-up?
GENEVIVE: I’m going to start taking night classes to become a paralegal. They make okay money. And with the money I earn from being a paralegal, I’ll go to law school. That’s where the real money is. (takes a swig out of her Thermos) What will you do when you grow up?
BEAUDELAIRE (confidently): Win the lottery.
GENEVIVE: That’s not much of a plan.
BEAUDELAIRE: No, of course not. That’s only Step One.
GENEVIVE: So what are the rest of the steps?
BEAUDELAIRE: Step One, win the lottery. Step Two, buy Mom a new house. Step Three, pay for you to go to law school. That’s new, by the way. Step Four, open a casino.
(Beaudelaire lies down and pillows his head on his crossed arms, watching the birds. Genevive watches him for a bit and then)
GENEVIVE: And?
BEAUDELAIRE: And what?
GENEVIVE: After you open the casino, then what?
BEAUDELAIRE: Oh, after that, I marry the girl Mom arranged for me. Probably we have kids. I thought that went without saying.
GENEVIVE: So you’re going to his the lottery - unlikely - and then open a casino - where you will lose money - and that’s your career plan.
BEAUDELAIRE: (closes his eyes) Oh, I won’t lose money on the casino. I’ll own the casino. And the house wins. (yawns) The house always wins. (yawns again, and joins his mother in sleep)
