*wince* I so do not want the responsibility of bringing someone back to this show! What if you hate it?

But if you do watch, just keep repeating "It's not Sam, but Sam will back" through the first half of the season. It will hopefully make you less stabby.

I... well. I am really happy now! And there is much Sam&Dean love! But, this being SPN, that could disappear forever in the next episode. And even if it doesn't, I loathed the beginning of the season with the power of 10,000 suns, and even all the good stuff we've gotten doesn't really fix how badly they handled it. Just be prepared to hate the first five or six episodes, at least, particularly if you've been waiting for the show to give Sam a storyline... waiting three years to be rewarded by the character being literally written out of the show for more than half a season is both frustrating and depressing. Soulless!Sam is fun, though, once you realize the show isn't just making Sam a horrible person for no reason again, and the love when Sam gets his soul back is absolutely lovely to watch.

Just. Go it with your guard up, I guess, if you do choose to watch.

I couldn't stomach the way that Sam was acting in the first part of the season, but you're right. As soon as the "SAM HAS NO SOUL!" thing came out, I could sit back and watch (or even enjoy) Robo!Sam without flinching. I guess it's because I felt so much better knowing that the incredible OOCness was for an actual reason rather than the less palatable possibilities of sloppy writing or drifting characterization.

I love that Sam's first priority after waking up with a soul was to hug Dean and just cling to him for a few seconds. At it's heart, SPN is the epic love story of Sam and Dean, and that's how I like it.

ETA: Also, that J2 photo! How adorable is it that even Jensen has to tilt his head up to rest his chin on Jared's shoulder during a hug?!

It was actually the spoiler that Sam was soulless that was the final straw for me--it just seemed (hell, seems, though less so, now that it looks like the show will be back for another season) like such a pointless waste. Don't get me wrong--I'm thrilled they didn't just default back to Sam being a horrible person who doesn't give a shit about his brother, but... three goddamn years waiting for a real Sam storyline, for some consistent Sam characterization that goes beyond doing whatever is needed to give Dean a reason to cry in that episode, and the first thing they do after after getting the boys to a decent place with each other is write the Sam off the show for more than half the season? For no reason whatsoever? ARGH. Especially since at that point the chances of another season seemed nonexistent ( ... )

Exactly. I kind of want to shake the writers sometimes and say, "Yes! While I know that Dean cries beautifully, and Jensen can pull off the emotional scenes like a pro, and it's nice to see that softer side of Dean sometimes, BUT CAN YOU PLEASE FOR ONCE NOT MAKE IT ALL SAM'S FAULT?!"

I would much rather that Dean show his softer side by being affectionate toward his brother, like in seasons 1 and 2, than by having his very soul crushed by whatever bad decision Sam's making each week ( ... )

Oh, man! This is so weird because I was just thinking about Down To the End verse three days ago! I have been in the mood to reread it. Now I will have reread and listen. :)
