It's not bad actually. I find that the secret is to only give yourself a finite amount of time (~20 min), as to not get obsessed with details/specifics and not make any progress. Also it is good to squint so you can lose track of details and only see the larger patterns in light or dark. I think it is good to have only one large directed light to make finding shadows easy. (And preferably to not work with charcoal over a white carpet.)

It's not so difficult. I think most people could do it if they just trained their eyes.
