In for a short read, anyone?

Anyone ready for a story excerpt? I'm not really clear on why I'm doing this but heck, I have nothing else to do till the 6th of january. This is an excerpt of my NaNo's 5th chapter, a really random part of it I guess...

He heard footsteps behind him and whirled around, nearly giving himself a whiplash. This time it was Verlie. He seemed, just like Lorelei, to be detached from the world. But unlike the redhead, Verlie’s eyes were hollow and like he was watching from far away. He was detached from everything, even himself, his emotions, maybe even his existence. It hadn’t always been like that; he remembered times when the platinum blonde still smiled, had hopes for the future.

“Come.” He said, taking Sami’s hand.

He took him downstairs, where the others were waiting. It was only then, Sami realized, that he felt remotely safe, like the chances of something horrible ever happening were very small.

The kitchen was packed, when they got there. It wasn’t a very big kitchen, just big enough to hold all nine of them so it felt crowded. There was a small fridge in a corner and a very dirty looking stove next to it. The stove was cleaned once in a while; he knew this because he’d seen it looking cleaner a few times.

There was a white wooden table in the middle, big enough for about fifteen people to sit there without trouble. Only three people were seated - Soren, Prosper and Lorelei- everyone else was just standing around. Verlie let go of his hand and went to sit next to Soren. When Cass passed by him, he noticed it for the first time.

“You cut your hair.” He whispered.

Cass stopped at on of the seats and turned his head slightly to him. He didn’t want to talk about it, he understood. They stared at each other for a moment longer until Sami decided that it was a good time to find some place to sit. He finally decided to sit to Soren’s left, thus he had Lorelei to his left.

“There’s something important about today.” Prosper said suddenly. That sentence was by far the most coherent thing Prosper had uttered in years. A simple, singular sentence.

It got very silent in the kitchen all of a sudden. He’d thought it was rather quiet before but now the silence was so great it almost felt like they would suffocate in it. All eyes were on the raven-haired male - he rarely spoke above a whisper, what could have possibly caused this? - except Lorelei’s, they were still glued to the ceiling. There had been an undercurrent of urgency in Prosper’s voice and that had probably been why such a grave silence fell upon them.

It was just so unnerving.

“Yes, it does feel that way doesn’t it?” Lorelei’s dreamy voice cut through the silence. “Pity we don’t know the date.”

“No one bothered to keep track of that.” Bjorn said.

“We didn’t have a reason to.” Sami said softly. His voice still carried through, the others nodded in agreement. The pressing silence was now definitely broken, washed away into soft murmurings as was usual. Prosper himself seemed to have forgotten that he had ever disturbed the natural flow of things; he was once again far gone into his musings.

I wonder why I chose Sami's point of view, of all the people. This story is fa~r from finished, perhaps I have between the 10 and 20% done, I don't know. I just know that I have a lot to write still. And I wish the fonts would stop changing.
