Summary: "There's no way that could be anyone's reward."
Terra’s face crumpled in the flickering light of the gas lamp, as though even having her eyes open were painful. We were all stunned at the thought of Terra leaving, her Esper side leaving, but, probably no one more so than she. She had fled below deck and I had found her after some minutes of hurriedly running around, panting; wordlessly I gave her a hug from behind, and sat down next to her.
“This is why I really didn’t want to start being a mother,” she said softly, probably not to me.
“Oh, Terr,” I started. “You’re a good mom.”
She sniffled and looked at me through teary eyes. “Relm,” she sighed. “I wish I knew I could keep my promise to them that I’d come back.”
“It’s what you needed to say to do what you need to do. With us.” She nodded. “I mean, Terr, if you hadn’t said that, there’s no way they would’ve let you go with us.”
She nodded again. “I know, I just don’t-”
“Terr, they’ll have their Mama back.”
“I wish,” she mused. I looked at her face, worried older than seventeen.
“You love them too much.”
“Too much for what?”
I shrugged and looked at the ground.
“Their parents loved them too…” she trailed off, and looked away from me without saying any more.
“I… ah,” I stuttered.
We didn’t say anything for a few minutes, but I put my hand on her shoulder. Finally I found some words.
“There’s no way that that could be anyone’s reward for what we’re going to do,” I said softly.
Terra turned her head and looked at me from emerald eyes. “Relm,” she sighed.
“No, Terra. You’re a hero.” A smile played at the corners of her mouth. “Terra, we’re all going to save the world. Together. No way that our reward’s being torn apart from you. Or each other.”
“Relm, you’re-I hope you’re right.”
“We’re family, Terra, not only you and the kids, but all of us.”
She nodded. “Relm, I… Thanks. You’re strong.”
I wasn’t sure what she meant. “So’re you. Terra, we’re going to get through this. We’re gonna make it. You’ll be with us.”
I felt like I almost believed myself.
